The Nativity Gourmet Club
The Nativity Gourmet Club was started in 1985 by several couples who wanted to begin a social ministry based on ‘food, fellowship and fun’. This premise continues, encompassing a group of people who enjoy cooking, good food, and the laughter and conversation any dinner celebration brings.
We begin our year in August with an organizational meeting to set our calendar for our monthly dinners as well as parish functions. Each couple selects a month to host the dinner in their home. They choose a theme then plan a menu around that theme, complete with recipes. Themes are only limited by one’s imagination. We have had salutes to countries, favorite cookbooks, beer and chocolate. We’ve dressed up for Mardi Gras, the Titanic and the Roaring Twenties. One week prior to their dinner, the host couple prints their menus and has them available at the church for the other members to select a recipe of their choosing to make and serve at the dinner, with the exception of the entrée which is the responsibility of the host couple. Each couple brings their own wine or beer.
The Gourmet Club is open to any member of the parish. No formal training is required…just a love of good food and the ability to follow a recipe. We dine together on the first Saturday of each month from September through June. For the end of the year June dinner, it is planned and prepared by the men and is alternately held poolside.
As part of the social ministry to Nativity, the club members donate a food event to the church’s annual auction. Past donations include a 5-course Valentine’s Dinner for eight couples; another year was a Martini Appetizer Party for 20. The Gourmet Club also participates in the Lenten Soup and Salad offerings, typically hosting the First Friday in Lent. The club has also produced a New Year’s Eve celebration with heavy hors d’oeuvres, continental breakfast and a band for dancing enjoyment. We have assisted in the Annual Priests’ Dinner, have provided food for the Parish Picnic, and supplied delectable desserts for bake sales.
To be a part of the Nativity Gourmet Club is to experience culinary adventures while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow parishioners. A good time is always had by all!
