Hispanic Altar of The Dead
The Hispanic altar of the dead is a celebration of
hope and a visual prayer of memorial and
intercession. Although rooted in pre-Hispanic
celebrations, the catholic missionaries gave it a
beautiful spiritual focus by incorporating elements
of our faith, so that rather than invoking the spirits
of ancestors to visit, we invoke the intercession of
the Saints for the souls of our faithful departed.
Elements: Pictures (in memoriam), Objects related
to their life (in offering); Rosaries or images of
Saints (asking for their intercession); Holy Water and
Incense (to cleanse the soul); Flowers and colorful
paper (to celebrate the hope for the New Life);
Candles and The Cross (that God may guide them to
His Kingdom with his light.
MANTENIENDO NUESTRAS TRADICIONES: El próximo mes de Noviembre celebraremos 1o – Día de todos
los Santos, y 2o – Día de los fieles difuntos. De la cultura hispana heredamos la costumbre de los altares de muertos.
Aunque originados en celebraciones prehispánicas, los misioneros les dieron un enfoque Católico muy hermoso al
agregar elementos de nuestra Fe: Así en lugar de invocar a los espíritus a visitarnos, invocamos la intercesión de los
Santos para que las almas de nuestros difuntos lleguen a Dios.
Elementos: foto de nuestros difuntos, en memorial. Objetos relacionados con su vida, en ofrenda. Rosarios e imágenes
de la Virgen y los Santos, para pedir su intercesión. Agua bendita e incienso, para purificar sus almas. Flores y papel de
colores, para celebrar la esperanza de la vida. Velas y la Cruz, para que Dios los lleve a su presencia.

on the sheet in the Narthex, and bring the following objects in a sandwich bag with your name on Sunday October 29
Si quieres incluir a tu difunto en esta tradición de memorial e intercesión apunta sus datos en la hojita del Narthex y
El próximo domingo 29 de Octubre, trae en una bolsa ziplock de sándwich con tu nombre y teléfono:
1. Una foto (PICTURE) de tu difunto – solo el rostro (OF THE FACE), 3.5 * 5 inches
2. Una flor (Naranja o amarilla – RED OR YELLOW FLOWER) o vela de pila (OR FLAMELESS CANDLE)
3. Un objeto pequeño que te lo recuerde (SMALL OBJECT TO REMEMBER HIM/HER BY)
Por favor no dejes nada de valor, solo algo simbólico. Que la foto sea copia, no originales.
