Confirmation:
“When they heard this, they were baptized . . . and when Paul laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them.” Acts 19:5-6a
Being sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation strengthens us for ongoing service in the Body of Christ in the Church and in the world. It prepares us to be active participants in the Church’s mission and to “bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds” (CCC, no. 1316). Finally, the Spirit sends us as workers in the vineyard and instruments of the Holy Spirit in renewing the earth and promoting God’s Kingdom of justice and peace.
In the Diocese of Memphis, the Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the Easter season when a child is in the eighth grade or above. Children are required to attend P.R.E. classes or have been enrolled in a Catholic school for the full year prior to beginning preparation to receive the sacrament. In other words, for a child to receive Confirmation in eighth grade, they must attend religion classes (PRE or Catholic school) in both seventh and eighth grades.
